Customer Installation of the Month – May
May 2015 Winner: Wayne R. from Eau Claire, WI
“My primary reason for building the array was environmental. Other factors that helped were: I had a good solar window on unproductive land, Federal tax incentives, and I was financially prepared to make the investment” — Wayne R., Installation of the Month Winner
Wholesale Solar: How long was the full installation process from receiving your equipment to flipping the switch?
Wayne: Because I am doing virtually all the installation by myself (I had one helper on the frame and one helper on the panels) we are not yet hooked up to the grid. That happens on June 18th. I am trenching and laying PVC conduit the next few days.
What was the most confusing or difficult part of the installation?
The most challenging part of the install was coming up with a method to suspend and plumb the ground mount posts during the concrete pour. Preparation was key in this process and because of that, my brother and I set all 20 posts in less than 2 hours (and, I might add, they are perfectly plumb).
Were there any unforeseen additional parts or tools you needed?
I have a good deal of construction equipment, including a skid steer with an auger and forks which was essential in unloading, drilling post holes and handling the 3″ schedule 40 pipe.
How did you choose to self-install?
I chose to self install this project because I am retired and had the time to do it and I have a good deal of construction experience. I owned a metal wall panel subcontracting firm. I also visited several professional installs and was not happy with the overall workmanship. That said, I know nothing about electricity.
What was your primary reason for adding solar to your home?
My primary reason for building the array was environmental. Other factors that helped were:
- I had a good solar window on unproductive land
- Federal tax incentives
- Financially prepared to make the investment
All things considered, I am very satisfied with the entire system and the support I received from Wholesale Solar and you in particular. I hope the plug-in portion of the install goes as well as the rest of it.
